Any ideas what this could be?

Have you seen or heard of my son's episodes and the possible diagnosis?

Corey has been having "screaming" episodes for 2 years. For awhile the neurologist thought they were Partial complex seizures but now he isn't sure. We have tried lamictal, keppra, clorazepate and trileptal without any relief for him.

The episodes occur in the am, afternoon and evening up to 9pm.

The last 5 out 6 episodes that lasted 40 minutes or longer happened between 1:30 - 2:30 pm all in different environments.

Some episodes are only 10 seconds like its starting up but never goes into a cycle and some last up to 70 minutes.

The episodes start by him calling out " momma, momma or help me, help me" in a scared, loud, sometimes screaming voice.

He then will cling onto us and bury his head. Sometimes clenching harder than others. Rarely a jerk, mild shake or stiffening.

After about 10- 30 seconds he will relax and talk saying his head hurts, its being squeezed, his stomach hurts, he's dizzy, his legs and arms may hurt.

Then it starts up again. The time between screams is 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes or 10 minutes.

I can always tell when its ending because the time between the screams gets longer.

He also is very aware during the whole time and obviously in pain.

Diastat has been given at 15 minutes which stops the episode however the doctor has changed his orders to discontinue it and just do soothing activities and see what happens.

The doctor now says he could be just scared. That he can't tell without a video EEG. We have been asked to do a 3 day video eeg but the last one was so devastating to him years ago - and now he's so much stronger. I think he would try to pull the wires out of his head due to his sensory issues.

Please email me at candice@sophtware.com if you have any leads.

Thank you,

Karen Addams - Parent to Parent Volunteer Coordinator

Coordinator with Navigation to Connections for Improved Student Outcomes (N2C), the
new PTI for Georgia.

My main duty as Volunteer Coordinator will be to develop and establish a “

Parent Training and Information Center (PTI)

Parent Training and Information Center (PTI) in Georgia

Parent Training and Information Centers (PTIs) are a funded program by the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) as authorized in Part D of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Parent Training Information Centers (PTIs) ensure that children with disabilities and their parents receive training and information on their rights, responsibilities, and protections under IDEA in order to develop the skills necessary to cooperatively and effectively participate in planning and decision making related to early intervention, educational and transitional services.

Navigation to Connections for Improved Student Outcomes (N2C) is the new PTI for Georgia. N2C is a program of Parent to Parent of Georgia.

N2C staff at Parent to Parent of Georgia assists families of children with disabilities (0-26) with education issues by providing a variety of supports, activities, resources and trainings. Levels of assistance vary based on individual needs.

For more information about N2C, call 1-800-229-2038 or 770-451-5484

National Disability Employment Awareness Month - Online Resource

Did you know that 1 out of 5 Americans has a disability?

Many people don't realize that people with disabilities are America's largest minority group. Despite this significant presence, there is a lack of regular public dialogue about how to be inclusive of this major segment of our population. As a result, it is all too common for people with disabilities to be overlooked and underrepresented in community activities and in the workplace.

In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Bobby Dodd Institute is providing free online disability awareness training at http://www.bobbydodd.org. The Web site provides the answers, tips, and resources to connect businesses to this untapped labor resource and to ultimately make a difference in the underemployment of people with disabilities. The majority of these resources are appropriate for disability awareness in a non-business setting as well.

Please take a few minutes to increase your disability awareness
by visiting www.bobbydodd.org.

Thank you!

Interfaith Disability Connection (IDC)

Are you and your family looking for a faith community that is welcoming to families with disabilities?

Interfaith Disability Connection (IDC) wants to help you. IDC wants to connect people with disabilities and their families to faith communities that are equipped to welcome and support them. IDC also wants to connect congregations to resources that help them learn to welcome and accommodate people with disabilities and their families. To accomplish these purposes we have launched a new web site at www.interfaithdisability.org. The site provides a searchable database of faith communities that are providing programs and supports for families. The site also provides a variety of other resource and tips for accessing services and support in the community.

Please consider visiting the site to sign up as a friend of IDC for free access to a host of information to help you get connected and if you are already a member of a congregation encourage your faith community’s leadership to consider becoming a member. By doing this you can help every house of worship become a place where everyone can worship, study, serve and volunteer.

Teacher Approval

Think back to when you were 6, 8 or 10 years old. Do you remember
your teacher? Do you remember how you looked up to her? Her words
were golden. Do you remember when you forgot to do your homework or
weren't paying attention? Her stern words cut you to the core. Not
because she was mean but because you desperately wanted her approval.

School ended and those days were long forgotten. Then my child was
diagnosed with autism.

Why didn't anyone warn me I'd become that 8 year old again?

I desperately need teacher approval, not for me, but for my child.

This is a common sentiment of parents to children with autism. So if
you're a teacher, Autism consultant, SLP, ABA therapist, OT, PT,
Psychologist, Social worker, Camp Counselor or anyone else that's an
authority figure to a child with autism -

THIS IS FOR YOU!

My child has autism. I know that. I'm not in denial. How could I be?
I live it every day. I have other children. My friends have children.
I know the difference. They answer questions, my child might not.
They play together, my child might not. They share their thoughts, my
child might not.

My child is different. He is on his own mission. I'm happy to be by
his side. I am thrilled when he learns something new, no matter how
small. I am proud when he accomplishes something I once never thought
possible. I take delight in his idiosyncrasies. Please rejoice with
me. Please notice his worth.

My child is multifaceted. He has weaknesses and strengths. He has
deficits and skills. People are always pointing out the deficits.
Please join me in noticing his skills.

Teachers. In our meetings, please allow for some time to recognize my
child's good points. When you do, I go home walking on air. When you
don't, I drive home in tears.

SLP's, OT's and PT's. When your opening statement is a positive
remark about my child, I begin to relax. When you only voice
concerns, my stomach twists into knots.

ABA therapists & Camp counselors. When you greet me by telling me my
son had a great day, my anxiety fades. When you focus on the
deficits, your words hurt me deeply all day.

Consultants, Psychologists and Social Workers. When you begin with
positive observations, my heart soars in delight. When you only
stress your concerns, my heart splits in two.

My child faces judgment at every turn. I invite you to stand apart!
Stand strong with us! Unique is good! Let's tell the world! Help me
instill pride in my son. Show him his greatness. Try and see his
perspective. Praise him as much as you can. By doing so, you improve
my child's life and build his confidence. You will motivate and
inspire him. He will exceed your expectations and I will be eternally
grateful to you.
