Having a Garage Sale

There is no need to have the perfect set up for a garage sale but it is always good to move unused items out of the house and make extra cash.

It is also a great way to teach children money skills, people and sale skills, organizing and cleaning out skills, and goals for what to do with the new money.

If that isn't enough motivation, then think of it as a neighborhood party and invite your friends to join in on the beneficial fun.

To make the process more productive and time saving follow these steps.

Grill Organization

GRILLING
What to do with all the utensils? They take up too much space in the kitchen and they are not where you need them unless they are at the grill. Here is a quick and inexpensive solution. I used paper clips but metal S at the hardware store would last longer. This was a great way to get started until you are able to run to the store.

Tip #1:
Bookcases are a great investment for any age child to store their belongings. Bookcases can evolve as the child grows older where some of the toy storage items will be disposed of after a certain age. Bookcases are the best buy for your money. To store small items on the bookcase use clear plastic bins without the lids. The child can see what's in the bin and can take the bin down from the bookcase easily. Cleanup is also easier when each item has a specific place to be put away. Label the bins with a picture of the toys and/or words.

Garage Organization Systems

Garage Organization Systems

garage-org.jpg

This is a great way to use wasted garage space and store 60 storage containers for a 3 car garage. A 2 car garage would store 40 containers. This was designed and made by my husband, Mike Lange. He used MDF board and measured the storage containers first to ensure a good fit. We store all our non-perishable, heat resistant items like holiday decorations, camping gear, auto care, and packing materials. The cost was cheaper than renting a storage unit for a month or two. It also adds great value to the home when we go to sell and lots of comments at the garage sales.

Similar concepts using the ceiling space can be purchased at Home Depot or Home Improvements Catalog. There are also storage systems for above the garage doors for large seasonal items.

Lighting

Motion sensor makes it easy to cut lighting costs and makes entering a room safer when hands are full. My brother installed this in his laundry room and what a difference it makes for him and his wife. When their hands are full of laundry they never enter a dark room. They are also installing this in their entry ways and hallways.

Cut lighting costs from 15-50%. Covers a 20'x20' area. Adjustable time-delays from 15 seconds to 15 minutes. Doesn't turn on with sufficient daylight.

Leviton 180 Degree Indoor Motion Sensor (991899) for $19.97 at Home Depot.

Kid's Furniture

Kid's furniture is a source for parents to find useful furniture for their children. You may write in the comments area with your own furniture tips or request help to find a certain item or solution for a specific need. Someone on the site should have the answer.

Tip #1:
One of the things I suggest to parents is to get bookcases for any age child to store their belongings. Reduce Meal Prep Time and Cleanup

  • Shop at Sam's/Costco or another inexpensive store to buy your meat in bulk.
  • Cook the meat at one time for a month's supply of meals.
  • Separate the meat into meal size freezer zip lock bags and freeze.
When its time to make a meal like spaghetti, take the meat out of the freezer, thaw in the refrigerator the day before and mix it up in the sauce. This allows you to clean the cooking pan only one time during the month and quickens the individual meal preparation times.

Helpful Tips for Buying at Garage Sales

Plan ahead and map out your destinations.

In the small city we once lived I made a laminated street map to be reused every week.

On Thursday I would get the newspaper and decide which one sounded like the best. The first sale was marked with a dry erase pen #1. From there I added a dot on all the other sale locations and then numbered them for the best traveling plan. No back tracking to keep the car time down and sale time up. I also noted the start time of the sales if one started an hour later in the same area. Sometimes along the route there will be other signs that did not advertise in the newspaper. Allow for some flexibility.

To Do List

See what can be done today - not what can't be done.

Make a To Do List for JUST today with only 2-5 items that are very manageable.

Make another To Do List that you don't look at everyday that is your Wish To Do List. On a day you feel very energetic or have only 1 to do that is simple take something from this list. This To Do List can take years to accomplish. Maybe even put the items in a priority order... the ones on top are the most important to you and the ones on the bottom are the least important .

Note: DO NOT beat yourself up for only doing a portion of any to do list.

Reading to your kids was more rewarding than mopping the floor. It will get dirty in an hour anyways.

You really do have groceries in the pantry or freezer you can eat for another day. Taking a walk and getting a shower was needed instead.

You get the idea. Life is spontaneous (and this is coming from a planner). Do what you can today and tomorrow you have another chance at getting something else done.
